Treatment heralds Alzheimer's breakthrough
|
The Alzheimer's Society last night hailed an apparent breakthrough in the treatment of dementia by scientists at Aberdeen University. A team led by Professor Claude Wischik published results of early trials of a new drug, suggesting it could be at least twice as effective as current medicines in slowing progression of the disease.

SNP political earthquake leaves Labour shaken up

The SNP swept in to seize Glasgow East early today in the biggest political earthquake in more than a decade.
Labour’s third safest seat in Scotland – one of its top 25 in the UK – fell to a vibrant nationalist onslaught personally headed by First Minister Alex Salmond, who visited the constituency a dozen times.

Scottish Labour hoping for narrow victory in today's Glasgow East poll
|
Scottish Labour officials believe they will narrowly win today's Glasgow East byelection but with a dramatically reduced majority after a fiercely-fought campaign by the Scottish National party.
Labour will put 400 activists into the constituency today to help their supporters get to polling stations. The party is desperate to avoid an embarrassing defeat by the SNP in a previously rock-solid seat, where it is defending a 13,507 majority.

Fishermen slam Lords report
|
SCOTTISH fishing leaders yesterday (Monday) hit out at a new report on the Common Fisheries Policy by the House of Lords committee on the European Union.
The report recommends fundamental reform of the CFP, arguing for a bottom up management approach through regional committees and voluntary conservation schemes.

Presiding Officer Honoured by Agricultural College
|
Scottish Parliament Presiding Officer Alex Fergusson MSP has been honoured for his outstanding contribution to rural affairs in Scotland.
He has been awarded a Fellowship of the Scottish Agricultural College in recognition of his contributions to agriculture.
Mr Fergusson, a former student of the college, received the honour at an award ceremony at Glasgow University’s Bute Hall on Friday July 4.
Mr Fergusson has been a farmer for more than 30 years and during this time has held a number of high-profile posts. He is an Honorary President of the Blackface Sheepbreeders’ Association, a Member of the Scottish Landowners’ Federation and has previously worked as a farm management consultant.
