Passenger dies after vomiting bug hits cruise ship docked in Scotland
A HOLIDAYMAKER has died after a vomiting bug hit 150 people on a cruise liner. The British man died aboard the cruise ship Marco Polo, which was last night docked in Invergordon, Easter Ross. A fleet of ambulances ferried the sick to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness. NHS Highland interim director of public health Dr Ken Oates said GPs were helping out.

Downing Street has let Scotland down
THE shareholders of Halifax Bank of Scotland will vote today to accept or reject the proffered takeover by Lloyds TSB. The likely outcome – given the relentless pressure from the failed HBOS management and a worried government – is that they will vote to approve the takeover, closing a story that began in Edinburgh on 17 July, 1695. Ministers were 'too quick to support HBOS plan'
The government was too quick to throw its weight behind the emergency rescue of Halifax Bank of Scotland by Lloyds TSB, critics of the plan said yesterday. The Merger Action Group is mounting a legal challenge at a tribunal in a bid to torpedo the deal. Their lawyers said government policy had been determined long before Business Secretary Lord Mandelson was asked to give his seal of approval in October.

Treatment heralds Alzheimer's breakthrough
The Alzheimer's Society last night hailed an apparent breakthrough in the treatment of dementia by scientists at Aberdeen University. A team led by Professor Claude Wischik published results of early trials of a new drug, suggesting it could be at least twice as effective as current medicines in slowing progression of the disease.

Scottish Labour hoping for narrow victory in today's Glasgow East poll
Scottish Labour officials believe they will narrowly win today's Glasgow East byelection but with a dramatically reduced majority after a fiercely-fought campaign by the Scottish National party. Labour will put 400 activists into the constituency today to help their supporters get to polling stations. The party is desperate to avoid an embarrassing defeat by the SNP in a previously rock-solid seat, where it is defending a 13,507 majority.

Fishermen slam Lords report
SCOTTISH fishing leaders yesterday (Monday) hit out at a new report on the Common Fisheries Policy by the House of Lords committee on the European Union. The report recommends fundamental reform of the CFP, arguing for a bottom up management approach through regional committees and voluntary conservation schemes.
